- Marginal Way (Ogunquit): 1.25 miles of pave along a coastly cliff. 39 seats on which to rest. In full flat and stroller friendly.
- Jordan Pond Path (Acadia): 3.3 miles level circuit around crystal clear water boasting mountain outlooks. A walk in the park that is among the most serene.
- Moxie Falls (The Forks): 2 miles roundtrip: one of the highest waterfalls in Maine, 90 feet. The walk is principally board walk.
- Wonderland trail (Acadia): 1.4 miles in the forests to a rocky outcropping. An ideal place to tide pool with the kids.
Moderate Hikes
These are not easy trails but they will pay off with breathtaking scenery and life-long memories.
- Mount Battie (Camden): 1.5 miles to the summit which overlooks the panoramic views of the Penobscot Bay. You may also drive up at your own choice.
- Gorham Mountain (Acadia): 1.8 miles that has varying terrain and ocean views. Less crowded than Cadillac.
- Bold Coast Trail: 9.4 miles of sea cliffs 100 feet in height. One of the most picturesque walks along the seashore hikes on the whole coast east.
- Borestone Mountain ( Elliotsville): 3.7 miles through a wildlife sanctuary to alpine ponds and mountain views.
Challenging Hikes (Experienced Hikers Only)
They are hard tracks, which demand appropriate equipment, fitness, and training. Attempt them not in sandals or bad weather.
- Beehive trail (Acadia): 1,5 miles iron rung and scrambling up and down the cliffs. Granted views of incredible Sand Beach and not suitable to one afraid of heights.
- Precipice Trail (Acadia): 1.6 miles that have ladders on the steep cliffs. Closed most of the time mid-August to spring break for peregrine falcon nesting.
- Knife Edge Trail (Baxter State Park): Day hike, the most difficult in Maine. An icy narrow ridge of granite, not more than 3 feet wide with 1,000-foot precipices on both sides. Plan 8 to 12 hours roundtrip. Here fatal accidents have taken place.
- Tumbledown Mountain: 5.6 miles, metal rungs, and alpine pond 2,800 feet. The western Maine has one of the most satisfying elevations.
What to Pack for a Summer Trip to Maine
When visiting Maine during a summer vacation it is difficult to pack as the weather rapidly changes. The warm afternoon of 80 o C can be changed into a cool evening of 58 o C on the coast. This is what I would always suggest carrying.
- Layers: It is imperative to have a light fleece or a hoodie even in July. Night fall along the shore is cold.
- Rain jacket: Not poncho, it is a proper waterproof jacket. June especially can be rainy.
- Firm shoes: Rocky trail shoes or hiking boots. Flip flops are good in the beach but awful in everything.
- DEET bug spray: The black flies are aggressive in May and June. Ticks are present all summer. Do not skip this.
- Sunscreen: The sun is also a factor that burns quickly, even on cloudy days.
- Cash: Lobster shacks, farm stands and small businesses are mainly cash only.
- Binoculars: To view whales, puffin tours, and to watch moose.
- Reusable water bottle: This is needed during Acadian hiking. Trailheads have refill stations.

Days 1-2: Portland. Sightsee the Old Port, brewery trail, food scene and Peaks Island ferry. Portland Head Light day trip to Cape Elizabeth.
Day 3: Southern coast. In the morning Ogunquit Beach and Marginal Way. Kennebunkport at lunch, and Dock Square. Head to Boothbay Harbor and arrive at your place of stay.
