Unfortunately, Tewes’s rise to television fame was accompanied by personal setbacks, particularly in relation to substance abuse. In the midst of the 1970s, with newfound wealth, Tewes succumbed to the allure of cocaine, which ultimately led to significant challenges in her life.

She described the drug as providing a sense of invincibility and courage, but it quickly became a destructive force that affected her career.

I was attempting to maintain my career, my spouse, and my home. I was ruining myself while trying to satisfy everyone. I was high on drugs. I didn’t get any sleep. I dozed off at work. I misbehaved at work, and it was there that I made my deadly error,” Tewes candidly shared.

Eventually, she recognized the toll it was taking on her well-being and made the decision to overcome her addiction. Regrettably, it was too late for her to reclaim her role on The Love Boat, and Pat Klous assumed the character of Julie’s younger sister, Judy.
