Larry Storch was born in New York City on January 8, 1923. He bravely served in the U.S. Navy during World War II before pursuing a fulfilling career in the entertainment industry. Following the war, he ventured into the world of nightclub comedy, showcasing his remarkable talent for impersonations and impressions, captivating audiences with his act, and appearing on various television shows.

Throughout his extensive and illustrious career, Storch made guest appearances in numerous television series, including popular shows like “I Dream of Jeannie,” “Get Smart,” “The Flying Nun,” and “The Love Boat.” He became a familiar face on renowned variety shows of the era, such as “Sonny and Cher,” “Laugh-In,” and “Hollywood Squares.”

Storch also lent his voice to animated cartoons and commercials, bringing life to memorable characters like Batman’s nemesis, The Joker, Tennessee Tuxedo’s sidekick Chumley, and the beloved Kool-Aid Man.

In the latter part of his career, he returned to his roots in New York and graced Broadway with his talent. Notably, he shared the stage with Reba McEntire in the 2000 revival of “Annie Get Your Gun.” Even at the age of 81, he mesmerized audiences with multiple performances each week in the 2004 production of the comedic play “Sly Fox.”

However, all his achievements were overshadowed by the indelible mark he left during his tenure on the ABC series “F Troop” from 1965 to 1967. The show, set in an outpost called Fort Courage in Indian country just after the Civil War, was a slapstick comedy where Larry Storch portrayed the role of Cpl. Randolph Agarn is one of the most comically inept members of a unit brimming with misfits.

Agarn and his business partner, Sgt. Morgan O’Rourke, played by Forrest Tucker, was constantly concocting money-making schemes, often involving the local Indian tribe known as the Hekawis. While O’Rourke provided the brains, Storch’s impeccable comic timing and refined mimicry skills allowed him to breathe life into the role of Agarn with sheer brilliance.

Storch’s versatility shone through as he not only played Agarn but also portrayed various Agarn relatives who unexpectedly arrived at the fort from distant locations, a testament to his incredible talent for impersonation. In a 2009 interview, Storch humorously recounted, “I had cousins who came from Moscow, Mexico, Montreal.”

“F Troop” may not have enjoyed a lengthy run, but like many sitcoms of that era, it left an enduring impression on those who watched it. Perhaps its lasting impact stemmed from its portrayal of stereotypes, including the hard-drinking, firewater-brewing Indians, which would soon fade away from television.

Storch credited his co-star, Forrest Tucker, for securing him the role of Agarn during an interview with The Asbury Park Press in 2007. Initially meant to play the sergeant, Storch’s fate changed when the producers saw Tucker donned in a cavalry suit resembling a polar bear. Tucker advocated for Storch’s inclusion, highlighting their potential chemistry, which ultimately led to Storch’s portrayal of Agarn.
